211 LA has tips for you to stay cool this summer.
- Drink Plenty of Water: Keep yourself and your pets hydrated. Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.
- Find Air Conditioning: If your home lacks air conditioning, seek refuge in shopping malls or public libraries. Check for emergency cooling centers in your community.
- Insulate Your Home: Keep your house cooler by insulating it and using drapes or shades to cover windows.
- Protect Your Skin: Sunburn reduces your body’s ability to cool down and can lead to dehydration. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses outdoors, and apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher at least 30 minutes before going out.
- Never Leave People or Pets in a Closed Vehicle: Cars can quickly become dangerously hot, even with open windows. Children and pets are especially vulnerable to heatstroke or worse when left in parked cars.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: Limit outdoor activities to the coolest parts of the day, typically early mornings or evenings. Take frequent breaks in shady areas to allow your body to recover.
- Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses: During extreme heat, it’s vital to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses. If you experience any symptoms, seek help immediately.
- Hydrate and Replenish: If experiencing heat-related symptoms, sip on a cool sports drink to replenish lost electrolytes and vitamins.
